Pension salary sacrifice moves part of your pay into an employer pension contribution. Before choosing an amount, check how much cash remains for bills and ask which scheme terms your employer uses.

Match the output to your budget

Start with the Money Worked Out salary sacrifice calculator to compare net cash pay before and after sacrifice. These are the amounts left after tax and deductions. Its chosen pension form shows employee and employer National Insurance (NI) savings separately.

UK Pay Calculators compares the same gross pension contribution through three methods: salary sacrifice, net pay and relief at source. It shows savings with annual and monthly results, but has no cash baseline without a contribution. Money Worked Out lacks that method comparison. WorkCalc UK shows gross salary before and after plus a net cost figure, without two net cash amounts.

If pension tax relief is your next question, use the pension tax relief calculator.

Ask what your employer will share

Your employer's NI saving is separate from the saving on your own pay. Ask whether your scheme adds any of the employer saving to your pension. Money Worked Out labels its sharing input as a percentage of employer NI saved. Enter the share your employer confirms.

Check your pay before agreeing

WorkCalc UK's entered-hours warning uses the wage floor for people aged 21 and over. Money Worked Out lacks that hours check. TapTax bases its warning on a fixed 35-hour week, so it does not use your entered hours.

Use the minimum wage checker and ask payroll to check the applicable age rate and your cash pay over the relevant pay period. Get your employer's confirmation before agreeing to a contract change. A calculator does not approve a scheme.

How we checked

The ranking counts five criteria set before checking the chosen pension forms: two explicit net cash amounts before and after, a separate displayed employee NI saving, a separate displayed employer NI saving, a Scottish setting that changes output and undergraduate plus postgraduate loan settings active together and changing output. A cash fall or a pension method comparison does not count as two net cash amounts. Features apply to the chosen form. The working row means written salary subtraction and savings totals. It does not require full tax band arithmetic. The numerical check covers current employee NI only and does not certify full calculations, future changes, Scottish totals, loan deductions or wage compliance. Fresh page loads on 3 October 2026 counted external services whose scripts loaded successfully before consent. Money Worked Out, TapTax, UK Pay Calculators and Fableworks HQ each had zero observed services; WorkCalc UK had three. Counts exclude the page's own scripts, styles, fonts and separate background data requests. These dated counts do not prove permanent absence or tracking behaviour. Unknown privacy entries mean unconfirmed, not absent. External controls were checked in the page with consent unaccepted; this does not certify normal usability.

The 3 October 2026 check used the 2026/27 tax year: £40,000 annual salary, £2,000 annual pension sacrifice, England, Wales or Northern Ireland, no loans and no employer NI saving shared. All five showed £160.00 annual employee NI saved, matching the narrow reference based on HMRC's employer rates and thresholds. That reference also gives £300.00 annual employer NI saved; the test checks employee NI only.

Checked on 3 October 2026.

Questions about the results

Which forms include Scottish tax?

The Scottish setting changed output in Money Worked Out, TapTax, UK Pay Calculators and WorkCalc UK. Fableworks HQ's chosen form covers England, Wales and Northern Ireland only. Read the Scottish salary sacrifice guide for context.

Can I include both student loan types?

Money Worked Out, UK Pay Calculators and Fableworks HQ allow an undergraduate plan alongside a postgraduate loan. TapTax makes you choose one type; WorkCalc UK has no student loan input. Read about student loan repayments if both apply to you.

Does agreement on NI prove every result?

All five showed the same employee NI saving for the current test scenario. That agreement does not verify future calculations, Scottish tax totals, loan deductions or wage limits. The methodology explains Money Worked Out's calculations and rounding; it does not document this exact comparison test.

Can salary sacrifice affect other pay?

Salary sacrifice can affect statutory pay. Ask your employer whether related earnings use your original salary or the reduced salary. The contract change needs agreement, as set out in government salary sacrifice guidance.
