What the figures assume
The yearly figure counts every week of the year as paid, which is how holiday pay works for most permanent jobs. The monthly figure is the yearly total divided by twelve, and a week is five working days. Take-home in the table is for someone taxed in England, Wales or Northern Ireland with the standard tax code, no other income, no pension and no student loan.
Each rate has its own page with the figures for 20 hours, 35 hours, 37.5 hours and 40 hours a week, the Scottish take-home, and an explanation of which tax bands the pay reaches. For a pension, a student loan or any salary not listed, the take-home pay calculator uses the same rates and method.
How an hourly rate becomes a salary
Multiply the hourly rate by the hours you work each week to get the weekly pay. Multiply that by the number of weeks in the year to get the yearly salary. To go the other way, divide a yearly salary by the weeks in the year and then by the weekly hours.
The hours in a contract matter too. A 40 hours week pays more over a year than a 37.5 hours week at the same rate, and the extra pay is taxed at your highest band. If a job is advertised as a full-time salary but you would work fewer hours, the pro rata calculator scales the salary to your hours.
The lowest rate an employer can pay a worker aged twenty-one or over is the National Living Wage, which has its own page in the table. Workers under twenty-one and apprentices have lower legal minimum rates.
Questions
How do I work out my yearly salary from an hourly rate?
Multiply the hourly rate by your weekly hours, then by the weeks in the year. The converter at the top of this page does the sum for any rate and any number of hours.
Does the yearly figure include holiday pay?
Yes. It treats every week of the year as paid, which is how paid holiday works for most permanent jobs. If you are not paid for some weeks, the real yearly figure will be lower.
Why does my payslip not match the monthly figure?
The monthly figure here is the year's pay split into twelve equal parts. If you are paid weekly or every four weeks, some months have more paydays than others, so single months can be higher or lower.
