Roles at Band 8a

The NHS careers pay rates page lists consultant prosthetist/orthotist, dental laboratory manager, project and programme management, modern matron (nursing) and nurse consultant (mental health nursing) as Band 8a examples.

Higher rate tax at every England Band 8a point

Even after the NHS Pension comes off, the entry salary of England's Band 8a leaves taxable pay above the basic rate band, so part of it is taxed at 40%. Income tax is £7,977.40 at entry and £10,557.10 at the top point.

National Insurance behaves differently. Pay above £50,270 attracts only 2%, so NI grows slowly across the band, from £3,161.16 to £3,305.60. On each extra pound of Band 8a salary, the pension and higher rate tax together take far more than National Insurance does.

All three England points share one pension tier, the one that also covers the Band 7 top point. Contributions run from £6,155.50 to £6,928.25. The next tier starts partway through Band 8b.

Band 8a on the Scottish scale

NHS Scotland splits Band 8a into two points, £65,125 and £70,303. The first Scottish point is above the top of the England band. Both points sit in the same Scottish pension tier, with deductions of £7,554.50 and £8,155.15.

Scottish income tax on Band 8a includes pay at the Scottish higher rate of 42%, which is above the England equivalent. Take-home is £42,099.52 at the first point and £44,650.82 at the second. So although the first Scottish point pays a little more than the England top point, it leaves less take-home than the £43,959.05 kept at that England point. The sources page lists where each tax rate comes from.
