Statutory Maternity Pay
Weeks 1 to 6£3,240.00
Weeks 7 to 39£6,412.56
Total£9,652.56
How this was worked out
  1. First 6 weeks: average weekly earnings × 90% = £540.00 a week
  2. Weeks 7 to 39: the lower of the weekly rate and first 6 weeks' amount = £194.32 a week
  3. Total: (6 × £540.00) + (33 × £194.32) = £9,652.56

What the calculator assumes

How it is worked out

SMP is paid for up to thirty-nine weeks. For the first six weeks you get ninety per cent of your average weekly earnings. This part has no upper limit, so the more you earn, the more you get for those weeks.

For the next thirty-three weeks you get £194.32 a week or ninety per cent of your average weekly earnings, whichever is lower. If ninety per cent of your earnings is below that flat rate, you get the same ninety per cent figure for all thirty-nine weeks. Both rates are on the gov.uk maternity pay page and the rates and thresholds for employers page.

The total is six times the first weekly amount plus thirty-three times the second. The calculator shows both lines and the total so you can check each step.

To get SMP your average earnings need to be at least £129 a week. If the figure you enter is below that, the calculator shows that SMP is not due and gives a total of nothing. The earnings test is on the gov.uk eligibility page.

There is also a service condition. You need to have worked for your employer without a break for at least twenty-six weeks, continuing into the qualifying week. The qualifying week is the fifteenth week before the week your baby is due. The calculator cannot check this, because it depends on the dates you worked.

Who is not covered

Employers pay SMP to employees who meet both conditions. Self-employed people cannot get it, and neither can people whose earnings or length of service fall short. gov.uk explains Maternity Allowance, which some people in those groups can claim instead. The full rules for SMP, including the notice you give your employer, are on the eligibility page.

The calculator covers maternity pay only. Paternity, adoption and shared parental pay have their own rules.
