How the example works

The Income Tax and employee National Insurance estimates use the Money Worked Out take-home engine and 2026/27 rates. The illustrative split uses HM Treasury’s reported UK public spending shares for 2025–26. The Treasury figures are published in Public Expenditure Statistical Analyses 2026, Table 4.2; the outturn can be revised.

Income Tax and National Insurance are paid into public funds. They are not ring-fenced for individual services. The figures below show how your estimated total would look if it followed those spending shares. Treasury reports the categories rounded, so the amounts are approximate and may not add back exactly to the total.

The take-home pay calculator shows your other deductions and lets you add a pension or student loan. For a quick comparison, try Where does the money go?.
