Band 8b roles

Strategic management, head of education and training, clinical physiology service manager and head orthoptist are the Band 8b examples on the NHS careers pay rates page.

The top pension tier inside Band 8b

The England Band 8b entry point shares its pension tier with all of Band 8a. The middle point, £70,896, falls in the top tier of the England scheme, the one with no upper limit. From here to Band 9 the contribution rate stays the same.

Moving from the Band 8b entry point to the middle point, the pension deduction climbs from £7,124.27 to £8,862. Higher rate tax and National Insurance take their share too, and take-home rises only from £44,904 to £46,363.48, about a third of the pay increase.

The step from the middle to the top point has no tier change. Take-home goes from £46,363.48 to £49,631.84, a noticeably larger share of that pay rise than the earlier step kept.

Scottish Band 8b

NHS Scotland pays Band 8b at two points, £76,888 and £82,251. The first Scottish point is a little below the England top point, and the second is above it. Both points are in the same tier of the Scottish scheme, with deductions of £8,919.01 and £9,541.12.

Scottish Band 8b pay reaches the Scottish higher rate of 42% but stays below the advanced rate band. Take-home is £47,895.38 and £50,537.84 a year. The Scottish top point leaves more than the England top point, while the Scottish first point leaves less. The NHS pay calculator gives the same figures for part-time hours.
