How this was worked out
  1. Pension rate: pay of £41,226.00 is in the tier from £35,156 to £52,778, so 9.8%
  2. Salary: £41,226
  3. Pension (net pay): £41,226 × 9.8% = £4,040.15, taken off before tax
  4. Personal allowance: £12,570. Payroll applies it as tax code 1257L, which gives £12,579 of tax-free pay.
  5. Taxable income: £37,185.85 − £12,579 = £24,606.85
  6. Basic rate: £24,606.85 × 20% = £4,921.37
  7. Income tax: £4,921.37
  8. National Insurance: (£41,226 − £12,570) × 8% = £2,292.48

The first nodal point

FY1 is nodal point 1 on the England scale and has a single rate. Every FY1 doctor on the national contract is paid the same basic salary, whatever their medical school or region. Extra payments for rota patterns come on top.

Deductions on an FY1 salary

Income tax on FY1 basic pay is all at the basic rate. The whole salary is below the upper earnings limit, so National Insurance is charged at the main rate on everything above the primary threshold.

The NHS Pension contribution for the FY1 salary is 9.8% of pensionable pay. It comes off before income tax, which lowers the tax bill. The tier is set by actual pensionable pay, so an FY1 doctor training less than full time can fall in a lower tier and pay a lower rate.

Student loans

Many FY1 doctors have a student loan, often on Plan 2, and some also carry a postgraduate or earlier loan. The FY1 salary is above every undergraduate plan threshold, so repayments start straight away. The student loan repayment calculator shows the amount for each plan, including two plans at once.
