How this was worked out
  1. Pension rate: pay of £47,610.00 is in the tier from £35,156 to £52,778, so 9.8%
  2. Salary: £47,610
  3. Pension (net pay): £47,610 × 9.8% = £4,665.78, taken off before tax
  4. Personal allowance: £12,570. Payroll applies it as tax code 1257L, which gives £12,579 of tax-free pay.
  5. Taxable income: £42,944.22 − £12,579 = £30,365.22
  6. Basic rate: £30,365.22 × 20% = £6,073.04
  7. Income tax: £6,073.04
  8. National Insurance: (£47,610 − £12,570) × 8% = £2,803.20
  9. Take-home pay: £47,610 − £6,073.04 − £2,803.20 − £4,665.78 = £34,067.98

Nodal point 2

FY2 is nodal point 2, a single rate for the second foundation year. The rise from FY1 comes with the move into the second year of the foundation programme, and there are no smaller steps inside either year.

Still in the basic rate band

Basic FY2 pay stays below the higher rate threshold in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and below the upper earnings limit for National Insurance. The whole rise from FY1 is therefore taxed at the basic rate and the main National Insurance rate.

The NHS Pension tier for the FY2 salary is the same as for FY1, so the contribution rate, 9.8%, does not change on the move, although the amount in pounds rises with pay.

After the foundation years

Doctors who go straight into core or specialty training after FY2 move to nodal point 3, the next step on the scale. Some take time out of training first and work in locally employed posts, where the employer may choose different pay. The take-home pay calculator covers any salary outside the national scale.
