How the 1p challenge works
On the first day you put aside one penny. On the second day you put aside two pence, and each day after that you add one penny more than the day before. By the end of the year a single day asks for three pounds sixty five.
Over a whole year the payments add up to £667.95. In a leap year the extra day brings the total to £671.61. Tick the leap year box if your year of saving includes the extra day in February.
How the 52-week challenge works
The weekly version follows the same idea with bigger steps. In the first week you save one pound, in the second week two pounds, and so on until the last week, when you save fifty two pounds. Across the year that comes to £1,378.
Some people change the amounts to suit their budget. You can set a different first week and a different rise each week, and the calculator works out the new total. A rise of nothing gives the same amount every week.
Starting in April or at another date
The challenge does not have to start on New Year's Day. Some people start in April with the new tax year, or on the day their pay arrives. Enter any start date and the chart and the month by month table follow it.
The total stays the same whatever the start date, because the payments are the same. The date changes which month each payment falls in. It also changes the "saved by today" figure, which counts every payment due up to today if you kept to the plan.
The reverse version: biggest amounts first
In the reverse challenge you make the same payments in the opposite order. The largest amount comes first and the smallest comes last. The total at the end is exactly the same.
People choose it for different reasons. Enthusiasm is often highest at the start, so the hardest weeks come while it lasts. In a challenge that starts in January, the reverse order also leaves the smallest payments for the weeks before Christmas, when many households spend more. Tick "Save the biggest amounts first" to see the reverse plan.
Where to keep the money
Many people keep the challenge money apart from their everyday spending. A separate savings account or a savings pot inside a current account are two common choices. Money kept apart is easier to leave alone. Accounts differ in the interest they pay and in their limits on withdrawals.
A jar of coins also works for the 1p challenge. Cash earns no interest, and it can go missing, so some people pay it into an account now and then.
