How the plan works
If you still need to save, the plan starts with a deposit today. It then uses the same original day each month, moving to month end when needed. Only dates on or before your deadline count. If the deadline is today or tomorrow, the plan needs the remaining amount today.
The monthly amount rounds up to pennies so the deposits cover the gap. The final deposit can be smaller. Small gaps can be covered before the deadline. Interest, withdrawals, inflation and tax are excluded.
A worked example
A target of £1,000.00, with £0.00 saved, leaves £1,000.00. From 3 October 2026 to 3 October 2027, the plan uses 13 deposits: 12 of £76.93 and a final £76.84.
Check the amount against your budget
MoneyHelper's savings-goal guide explains balancing your target, time and spare money. Try a different target or deadline to compare the amount needed.
For salary income, use take-home pay. The savings challenge offers a different deposit pattern. Compound interest includes an interest assumption. Inflation shows changing buying power. For fixed-rate debt repayments, see the loan repayment calculator.
Questions
When does the plan start?
If you still need to save, the first deposit is today, using the date in London. Later deposits fall on the same original day each month. If that day is missing, the deposit falls on the month's last day. Dates on your deadline count.
Does the plan include interest?
No interest is included. The plan also leaves out withdrawals, inflation and tax. It shows how much your deposits need to add to the money already saved.
What if I have enough saved already?
If your saved amount meets or exceeds the target, the plan needs no deposits. It shows the money already saved without reducing it to the target.
