How this was worked out
  1. Salary: £137,874
  2. Personal allowance: £0. Payroll applies it as tax code 0T, which gives £0 of tax-free pay.
  3. Taxable income: £137,874 − £0 = £137,874
  4. Basic rate: £37,700 × 20% = £7,540
  5. Higher rate: £87,440 × 40% = £34,976
  6. Additional rate: £12,734 × 45% = £5,730.30
  7. Income tax: £48,246.30
  8. National Insurance: (£50,270 − £12,570) × 8% = £3,016, plus (£137,874 − £50,270) × 2% = £1,752.08, total £4,768.08
  9. Take-home pay: £137,874 − £48,246.30 − £4,768.08 = £84,859.62

OF6 ranks

OF6 is Brigadier in the Army and the Royal Marines, Commodore in the Royal Navy and Air Commodore in the RAF. It is the most senior rank below the senior officers who start at OF7. The scale has 6 levels, the first two equal.

No personal allowance

Every OF6 salary is above the income at which the personal allowance disappears. All of the pay is taxable, and the part above the additional rate threshold is taxed at the additional rate.

Because the allowance is already gone, the taper no longer applies. Each step up the OF6 scale is taxed at the additional rate plus the lower rate of National Insurance, which is simpler than at OF4 and OF5.

Pension tax at senior ranks

Members pay nothing into the forces pension, but the pension still grows each year, and that growth is tested against the annual allowance. At senior ranks a tax charge can arise. It is not part of this take-home figure. The methodology page lists what the calculation includes.

Questions

Does a brigadier get a personal allowance?

No, every OF6 salary is above the income where the allowance is fully withdrawn.

Can a brigadier face a pension tax charge?

Yes, if pension growth in a year goes over the annual allowance. The forces scheme is non-contributory, but growth still counts.

What is the monthly take-home for OF6?

About £7,071.64 to £7,315.97 in 2026/27.
