Best teacher pay calculator

Updated · Published by Money Worked Out

Money Worked Out covers the five essentials checked here: England's teacher scales, the September 2026 award, pension tiers, London areas and part-time pay. It shows the sums without adverts or third-party scripts and also covers Wales and Scotland. If your pay includes allowances or a specific leadership point, another calculator can fit your job better.

Match the scale to your job

A teacher calculator needs the right pay point and area before the deductions mean much. For England, check whether you need the main range, upper range or leadership scale. The England teacher pay page is a starting point for checking your scale.

London choices matter too: inner London, outer London and the fringe are separate pay areas. Use the inner London pay page if that is where your post sits. Money Worked Out, My Pay Calculator, Teacher Pay Calculator, KnowTheCost and Teacher Take Home Pay all include London area choices.

For a part-time post, enter your share of full-time work. Those five calculators support part-time teachers and Teachers' Pension tiers. Public Sector Calculators asks you to type a pension rate instead of choosing the tier for you. KnowTheCost explains its limits, including an indicative September 2026 scale and no student loans or tax code changes in its teacher calculator.

Allowances and leadership points

Teaching and learning responsibility (TLR) payments and special educational needs (SEN) allowances need their own place in the calculation. The Money Worked Out teacher calculator has no field for either. Its leadership range also stops at the minimum and maximum, so it cannot select an exact point between them.

My Pay Calculator's teacher page accepts TLR and SEN payments and leadership points. It also writes out the tax and National Insurance calculations using your figures. That makes it useful when you want to include an allowance and follow those deductions.

Teacher Pay Calculator has separate calculators for qualified teachers, unqualified teachers, lead practitioners and leadership. Its leadership calculator runs from L1 to L43. You can enter the actual TLR paid, and it has a three-year pay projection and a Teachers' Pension projector. Its results show deductions in a table without written working.

Teacher Take Home Pay accepts TLR and SEN allowances and has no adverts or third-party scripts. The catch for a new pay check is its September 2025 scale, even though the tax calculation uses 2026/27.

Choose Wales or Scotland directly

Money Worked Out is the only option in this comparison with separate teacher scales for both Wales and Scotland as well as England. Go to teacher pay in Wales or teacher pay in Scotland to choose the scale for your post. It also supports Scottish income tax.

My Pay Calculator's teacher page and Teacher Pay Calculator cover England. A calculator's tax coverage does not establish which teacher pay scales it has. Look for your nation's scale before entering your point.

Check a payslip during the award year

The pay award applies from September. April to August of the same tax year were on the old scale, so a full year at the new salary will not describe that mixed year. Teacher Pay Calculator labels its result an annualised estimate: pay shown as if it applied for a full year.

For a monthly check, compare the scale and allowances with that month's payslip, then look at each deduction. The Money Worked Out calculation method explains its sums. If you repay a loan, check your plan with the student loan repayment guide. Ask payroll to explain any entry you cannot match.

How we checked

Each site's main calculator opened in Chrome and its HTML read on the check date. Features are true only when seen in the calculator, false when absent from the calculator, its menu and its sitemap, and unknown otherwise.

M6 on the main pay range, England outside London, full time, Teachers' Pension on, no student loan, 2026/27 tax. Sites on the September 2026 award show a gross of £46,939 or £46,940. Money Worked Out shows £1.80 a year more than most because it uses the £12,579 of tax-free pay that the 1257L tax code gives on a payslip. Teacher Take Home Pay uses the September 2025 scale, so its figure is lower.

Checked on 3 October 2026.
